Changed in His Presence

We have been saying how Scripture engagement is actually an encounter with God through His Word. And of course anyone who encounters God can’t remain unchanged. We are changed just in His presence.

Knowing God is a relationship. It’s a deep relationship. It’s an intimate relationship. But that is sometimes very hard for us to understand. And God has given us in the Scripture a pattern of exactly what it means to encounter God in the intimacy of relationship.

Now you can encounter God at Sinai where you are scared to death of God who has all power and can just destroy you because of his holiness and our sin, or on the other side of the Cross, we can encounter the intimacy of being with Jesus, walking with Jesus. And that’s what we want as we engage Scripture.

Mary and Martha

So let’s go to Mary and Martha in Luke 10 verse 38. And here as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village, and there a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And we know the story.

Martha is busy doing all of the work and her sister Mary is sitting at the Lord’s feet. And Martha gets mad. She says, “Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” And to her great shock, Martha here’s the God of the universe say, “Oh, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about so many things. But one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Now in reality, and culturally, Martha was doing the right thing. She had the God of the universe in her living room and she is waiting on Him. Mary, a typical sister, she just sitting there doing nothing. So Martha gets mad.

What is unexpected is for Jesus to break all social norm and tell Martha she’s the one who was wrong. Culturally, Martha was right. Mary was wrong. But, what was it about Mary that made Jesus refocus Martha?

And that is that Mary was content to be with Jesus. To listen to Hm. To follow Him. Those are beautiful pictures of what it means to encounter God. Because in Christ there is now no more condemnation for us. We can approach Him without fear. Perfect love drives out of fear. And the Lord loves us perfectly.

Encountering God

To encounter God is to have a relationship with Him. But one that is totally in love. Totally without fear. We are like Mary. We can sit at His feet. It’s not what we do, but it’s Who we are with. We don’t come to God by our works. We come to God by our hearts. And we rest in Him.
